| January 2006 | A very dry month; temperatures and sunshine near normal. Mean max. temp. 6.2°C (-0.4); mean min. temp. 2.1°C (0.0); rainfall 16.8 millimetres (33%); sunshine 61.9 hours (111%). Coldest January since 2001; driest January since 1997. A very dull start to the New Year: sunshine 1st/19th only 12.8 hours (but 20th/31st 49.1 hours). 3rd successive month with below average mean temperature (but only marginally below average in each case). | February 2006 | Coldest February since 1996 and 4th successive colder than average month (but not by more than 0.6°C over this period). A little drier than average February, but sunshine near normal. Mean max. temp. 6.5°C (-0.7); mean min. temp. 1.6°C (-0.2); rainfall 31.9 millimetres (91%); sunshine 75.2 hours (104%). | 30th April 2006 | Wettest day of year so far; rainfall 12.9 millimetres. Not a particularly heavy fall, but illustrates the dry nature of 2006 to date. |
| April 2006 | Coldest April since 2001, despite mean temperature being 0.7°C above the 30 Year (1976/2005) average. Driest April since 2003; dullest April since 2001. | May 2006 | Despite the cool end to the month it was still the warmest May since 1999; after a run of 6 drier than average months (November 2005/April 2006) rainfall was one and a half times the normal, it was the wettest May since 2000 and also the wettest month of any since July 2004; it was the dullest May since at least 1997. | June 2006 | A very warm, dry and sunny June. Mean max. temp. 22.8°C (+2.9); mean min. temp. 12.1°C (+1.5); rainfall 24.3 millimetres (48%); sunshine 258.5 hours (144%). Warmest June since 2003 only (but mean max. temp. the highest in June since 1976); driest June since 2001; sunniest June since at least 1997 and sunniest month of any name in at least the last 9 years. | 19th July 2006 | Hottest July day on record (1972). Maximum temperature 35.2°C; previous July record 33.5°C on 3rd July 1976. |
| 20th July 2006 | Minimum temperature 20.7°C, second highest on record (since at least 1972) in any month of year (highest was 21.1°C on 9th August 2004). |
| 26th July 2006 | In a 2 hour thunderstorm commencing at 1820 GMT an exceptional rainfall of 75.5 millimetres was recorded. This is the highest daily rainfall in July since at least 1972, and the second highest daily rainfall (after 78.1 millimetres on 22nd September 1992) in any month over this period. |
| July 2006 | A very hot, very wet and very sunny month. (In reality it was in fact a very dry month except for the thunderstorm in the evening of 26th, details as above). Mean max. temp. 27.8°C (+5.5); mean min. temp. 15.1°C (+2.5); rainfall 93.4 millimetres (216%); sunshine 297.2 hours (155%). It was the hottest July and the hottest month of any name since records commenced in 1972, the mean temperature easily exceeding the previous two hottest months, August 1997 and July 1983. It was also the sunniest month of any name since at least 1997, sunshine exceeding the previous best (June 2006) in this period by 38.7 hours. Rainfall was the highest in July since 2004 only. | August 2006 | A cool, wet and dull August. Mean max. temp. 21.0°C (-1.4); mean min. temp. 12.8°C (+0.1); rainfall 91.4 millimetres (184%); sunshine 147.4 hours (79%). | September 2006 | A very warm and sunny September; drier than normal. It was the warmest September since records began in 1972, the mean temperature exceeding the previous warmest September (1999) by 1.1°C, and also August 2006 by 1.2°C. The mean temperature was also 0.5°C above the 30 Year (1976/2005) mean for August, on average the warmest month of the year. It was the sunniest September since 2003 only and driest since 2004 only. | October 2006 | A very mild, but not record breaking, October. The mean temperature (14.1°C) was the second highest since at least 1972, being only 0.2°C below the October 2001 mean (and just 0.1°C above the October 2005 mean). Both rainfall and sunshine were a little above average, October being the driest since 2003 only, and the sunniest since 2003 only. | November 2006 | A very mild and sunny November, and also rather wet. With November 2003 the equal 2nd mildest November since 1972 (after November 1994). Wettest Autumn since 2002; sunniest Autumn since 2003. Mean max. temp 17.1°C (+2.7); mean min. temp. 10.2°C (+2.3); rainfall 173.4 millimetres (104%); sunshine 442.1 hours (136%). |
