April 2006 Weather Review

April (since 1973) at Royston (Iceni) Weather Station:

How green is my valley? Not quite as green as it usually is in this particular valley just south of Church Hill in the Pen Hills on the western fringes of Therfield Heath, Royston due to the cold and dry Spring to date (4th April 2006). Church Hill itself (in the foreground) is almost devoid of any green grass at this time but a few pasque flowers are braving the dry and exposed conditions in the thin soil covering the underlying chalk. A NE wind of force 6 knots gusting to 18 knots is propelling showers across the South Cambridgeshire Plain towards the hills, whilst the temperature at the time of the photograph (1513 GMT) is 8.1°C. Sunshine for the day was 7.7 hours. Although Royston is set in a predominantly arable farming area there are still plenty of sheep in the district, with the  overall population seemingly increasing in recent years. Large numbers of sheep are usually to be found on the Wimpole Hall estate (some 10 km N of Royston) which specialises in rare breeds (as seen in this picture taken at 1136 GMT on 18th April 2006). The lambing season has been in full swing for several weeks and the new arrivals can be seen in the fields or at close quarters under cover on the farm. It was a day of sunny spells and variable cloud with a light westerly breeze drifting across the estate. The day maximum temperature (at Royston) was 15.6°C. The St. Georges Day Festival at Wrest Park (27 km SSW of Royston) over the weekend of 22nd/23rd April 2006 attracted large crowds who were able to enjoy a wide variety of displays to mark the occasion. In this picture (taken on 22nd at 1213 GMT) the spectators are witnessing a troop of gladiators being put through their paces. The House can just be seen in the background to the right of the photograph, whilst the splendidly restored Orangery is just visible in the middle distance on the left. In a mainly cloudy period the sun shone exceptionally for most of the day on 22nd and sunshine (at Royston) logged 9.8 hours (maximum temperature 16.5°C).
