This old chalk pit cut into the north facing escarpment of the East Anglian Heights some 5 km SSE of Royston is now a designated nature reserve. Newsells Park and the village of Barkway are both close to this site (as seen at 1341 GMT on 20th February 2006). The enclosed aspect of the pit provides shelter from a N wind of mean speed 5 knots gusting to 18 knots blowing across the South Cambridgeshire Plain and up on to the Heights at this time. The temperature (at Royston) is 6.1°C, having fallen from the day's maximum of 7.0°C at 1320 GMT. Sunshine for the day was 2.4 hours. (Photo: Daniel Barker, Stevenage).	Snow showers occurred in the Royston area in the morning of 23rd February 2006 and in this scene 1.5 km E of the town the snow is readily settling on this field which had been ploughed and rolled only the previous day. However, on nearby grass and crop surfaces the snow had hardly settled at all at this time. As can be seen the falling snow has somewhat reduced the visibility in fairly calm conditions with only the occasional wind gust to 6 knots. The temperature is 0.5°C (after an overnight minimum temperature of -0.5°C) and later rose to a day maximum of 3.5°C. It was a completely sunless day.	Although bright at times, 27th February 2006 was an essentially cloudy day in Royston and managed only half a minute of bright sunshine all day! This is a view across some of the dry valleys on Therfield Heath, Royston in very dull late afternoon (1647 GMT) conditions. The slightly colder than average Winter now drawing to a close has curtailed any new grass growth and the Heath has a distinctly brown appearance from last year's old growth. Rain moving down the country from the North reached Royston at about 2200 GMT and introduced much sunnier, but colder, weather for the next day.
