November 2007 Weather Review
It was a drier and sunnier than average November in Royston, with temperatures about average.
The mean daily maximum temperature in November was 10.4°C, which is 0.7°C above the 30 Year (1976/2005) average for Royston. The mean night minimum temperature was 0.1°C below average at 4.8°C.
The highest daily maximum temperature recorded in the month was 16.5°C on 1st, whereas the lowest night minimum temperature was –1.0°C on 24th. The ‘opposites’ of these values were a lowest daily maximum temperature of 5.5°C on 23rd and a highest night minimum temperature of 10.9°C on 2nd. It was the coldest November since 2005 only.
Totals of 3 air frosts and 9 ground frosts occurred in November. A sharp fall in temperature was recorded at the passage of a cold front on 8th, from 13.1°C at 1445 GMT to 8.1°C at 1520 GMT.
The mean earth temperature at 30 cms depth as recorded at 0900 GMT daily was 8.3°C. The highest and lowest earth temperature values in the month were 10.9°C on 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and 6.0°C on 17th, respectively.
The first half of November was rather dry with only 4.7 millimetres rainfall registered up to 17th. In the ensuing 4 days 18th/21st a total rainfall of 34.6 millimetres was then recorded, followed by mainly dry weather for the remainder of the month. Total rainfall in November was 44.4 millimetres, which is 85% of the 30 Year (1971/2000) average.
The number of "rain days" (0.2 millimetres or more) in November was 9, with rainfall exceeding 1.0 millimetre on 7 of these days. The wettest day of the month was 21st with 15.9 millimetres rainfall. It was the driest November since 2001.
The first snowfall of the season occurred on 18th with rain turning to snow in the evening, but the snow did not settle.
Despite the November sunshine total of 93.9 hours being 38% above the 30 Year (1971/2000) average it was nonetheless the dullest November in Royston since 2004. The sunniest day of the month was 6th with 8.0 hours sunshine. Only 4 days , 18th, 20th, 24th and 27th, in November were completely sunless.
The mean wind speed in November was 5.3 mph. The highest daily (00/00 GMT) mean wind speed in the month was 11.5 mph on 10th, whilst the lowest daily mean wind speed was 0.1 mph on 4th. The maximum wind gust speed recorded in the month was 39 mph on 10th.
Winds with southerly or westerly components dominated the month as the following analysis of wind directions as observed at 0900 GMT daily shows: NORTH 0 days, NE 0, E 2, SE 3, S 6, SW 8, W 9, NW 2, and CALM 0.
The mean MSL pressure in November was 1017.1 mB, which is 2 mB above the 30 Year (1976/2005) average. The highest and lowest pressure values recorded in November were 1032 mB on 2nd and 991 mB on 19th respectively.
The mean relative humidity in the month was 88.9%. The highest daily (00/00 GMT) mean relative humidity was 99.7% on 20th, whilst the lowest daily mean relative humidity was 70.5% on 9th. The absolute lowest relative humidity reading in November was 33% at 1320 GMT on 9th.
Fog (visibility < 1000 metres at 0900 GMT) was not observed on any day in November.
AUTUMN (September/November) 2007: Although the mean temperature in Autumn was up to average it was, in fact, the coldest Autumn in Royston since 1998, but the mean temperature this year was equalled in Autumn 2003. The mean daily maximum temperature in Autumn was 14.9°C, which is 0.5°C above the 30 Year (1976/2005) average. The mean night minimum temperature was 7.9°C, which is precisely on the average.
Total rainfall in Autumn was 119.0 millimetres, which is 71% of the 30 Year (1971/200) average. It was the driest Autumn since 1997.
The Autumn sunshine was 16% above average at 377.0 hours.
