| In rather dull conditions on 3rd April 2012 at 1358 GMT this photograph shows just a part of the extensive daffodil display on the Campus of Middlesex University (55 km S of Royston). The large country park Trent Park which surrounds the Campus dates back to the 14th Century when it was part of Enfield Chase, one of King Henry IVs hunting grounds. The daffodil display this year appears to be unaffected by the continuing drought gripping the region and is as stunning as ever. The first half of April was similarly very dry but the second half of the month was considerably wetter. Although a brief sunny interval occurred at about this time it was followed by a particularly heavy shower. Temperatures were well up to average that day with a maximum of 14.6°C at Royston compared with a 30 Year average of 12.2°C. The overnight minimum of 6.9°C at Royston was similarly above average, by 2.9°C. Sunshine for the day was restricted to 2.6 hours. | The Revitalisation Project at Wrest Park, Silsoe (27 km SSW of Royston) which began in 2010 saw the restoration of the Italian Garden in 2011 and this picture (taken on 14th April 2012 at 1439 GMT) shows the second major flower display to grace the Garden since then. In this view, which shows less than half of the Italian Garden, tulips, wallflowers, hyacinths, violas and Crown Imperials provide a splash of early season colour. On the other side of the hedge is the restored Rose Garden and beyond that the Statues, croquet lawn, Long Water and in the far distance the Archer Pavilion. The Revitalisation Project is part of a 20 Year multi-million pound restoration programme which is designed to take the already magnificent Wrest Park back to its past glories. Although on this day sunshine of 7.7 hours was recorded at Royston much of this was early and late and it was similarly rather cloudy at Wrest Park in the middle part of the day. | Once again this year there are large swathes of bright yellow in the Royston district in the form of flowering oil seed rape. The crop seen in this picture on 26th April 2012 at 0725 GMT is adjacent to the south side of the A505 road about 2.5 km E of Royston and just a few hundred metres east of the Greenwich Meridian. This crop has grown rapidly in height in the previous few weeks and although it is not yet fully in flower it still manages to create an impressive display. This view is looking due S to the East Anglian Heights on the horizon. The state of the sky gives the impression of rain to come and a number of mainly light showers occurred during the day. The oil seed rape is swaying in a SSW wind of mean speed 12 knots gusting to 20 knots (in a temperature of 8.7°C), whilst later in the day gusts of 33 knots were recorded at 1435 and 1530 GMT. Despite the showers and extensive cloud at times sunshine still managed to register a daily total of 6.5 hours. |
