The Great Storm of 16th October 1987 - 3

Several trees have fallen together in this copse on the Burloes estate on the eastern edge of Royston. This picture was taken some 3 hours after the height of the storm and the sun is shining brightly, but it is still very windy. This tree root seems to be larger than most! It is almost certain to be that of a beech, a species which thrives on the chalk of the Royston area. Beech trees are generally the largest growing specimens to be found in the woods and plantations around the town.
Another mature tree on the Burloes estate has been blown right out of the ground by the force of the gale. The weather in this picture looks a lot better than it really is! The track through this small copse on the Burloes estate close to the B1039 Royston to Saffron Walden road has been completely blocked by fallen trees and branches.
