| Under a threatening sky at 1550 GMT on 16th July 2011 this is a southward looking view along the footpath/cycleway which runs at the side of the Greneway School playing field in Royston. Until this new footway was constructed several years ago this was a narrow and difficult route between Garden Walk and Cherry Drive for pedestrians and cyclists and a challenge to maintain in good order in the face of continually encroaching vegetation. The laurel shrubs planted along the edge of the new route have now grown sufficiently to virtually exclude any view across the playing field. This day was not a particularly good day for July with a maximum temperature 3.1°C below the 30 Year (1981/2010) average at 19.5°C, and sunshine of only 3.5 hours. A SW wind of mean wind speed of 10 knots gusting to 16 knots is affecting the town at the time of the photograph in a temperature of 18.6°C. | It is now 10 years since the leaf miner moth began to make its presence felt in the district around Royston (and further afield). It attacks the leaves of horse chestnut trees large and small and this photograph (taken at 0732 GMT on 23rd July 2011) shows a leaf on a young tree alongside the Icknield Way 1.5 km E of Royston. About this time of year the horse chestnut trees take on a distinctive brown colour as though Autumn had already arrived. The moths lay their eggs in the leaves and when the caterpillars hatch they eat the leaves from the inside. Although the leaf miner moth damage is said not to permanently damage the trees it remains to be seen how long the trees can survive in the face of this annual onslaught. This day was cool for July, the maximum temperature of 17.6°C being 5.3°C below the 30 Year average for 23rd July. Sunshine totalled only 4.8 hours for the day. | The town centre in Royston is once again bedecked with colourful hanging baskets of flowers this Summer, an example of just two of the many baskets on display being shown above (as seen at 1534 GMT on 25th July 2011). These particular baskets are at the Cross, whilst nearby on the south side of Baldock Street the Old Post Office building (now a 'second generation' public house) has an array of multiple baskets along its frontage. On the Old Post Office site in mediaeval times stood the hospital of St. John and St. James of Jerusalem, as recognised on one of the familiar blue and white plaques attached to buildings recording the history of various sites in the town. After a bright start this was a disappointing mainly cloudy day in Royston, satellite imagery showing clear skies and abundant sunshine tantalisingly close to the west! In the event sunshine for the day was only 2.9 hours. |
