On Tuesday, 4th January 2011 the first partial solar eclipse of the year was experienced across a large swathe of the Northern Hemisphere from north Africa to China. In Royston the eclipse had already commenced at sunrise and reached a maximum coverage of the sun's disc of about 75%, whereas in NE Sweden about 90% was achieved. In this photograph taken at 0924GMT mid-way between Royston and Barley the eclipse was coming to an end in this locality and the extensive  cloud cover which had prevented viewing of the phenomenon temporarily let a few rays of the sun illuminate this scene. Sunshine was at a premium on this  day and only 8 minutes sunshine was recorded for the whole day. The temperature at this time was 1.2°C, and a SSW wind of mean speed 8 knots gusting to 12 knots was in evidence. Despite the frost and snow and extreme cold experienced in late November and December 2010 this 'post cereal harvest' crop at Eagle Tavern 1.5 km SE of Royston looks in remarkably good condition as viewed on 18th January 2011 at 0904 GMT. In previous years this type of crop has provided food for a visiting flock of sheep but in their absence this year it will probably be just ploughed in as 'green' manure. The clear sky and sunshine in this view heralded a fine day and a sunshine total of 6.9 hours, an exception in this very dull January. The hedge and trees in the top left of the picture mark the route of the Barkway Road which forks a few metres to the left of this point, the B1368 proceeding southwards to the crest of the East Anglian Heights and Barkway, and the B1039 south-eastwards to Great Chishill and Saffron Walden. It may be not long after sunrise but these two sugar beet harvesters to the right and left of the picture plus accompanying tractors and trailers are hard at work adjacent to the A505 road some 2 km east of Royston. The beet sugar campaign is coming to an end after the disruption across East Anglia in December due to snow and frozen ground and here the crop was quickly moved off site in order to meet processing plant deadlines. This was a particularly dull morning (26th January 2011 at 0834 GMT) and the driving drizzle in a NNW breeze of mean speed 4 knots gusting to 10 knots was not ideal for the task. At least the temperature was a reasonable 5.2°C but the ground was very wet after the wet and dull January. No sunshine at all was recorded on this day and in the 6 day period from 23rd to 27th inclusive sunshine totalled only 4 minutes!
