| From a vantage point on the Greenwich Meridian to the south of Royston this view looks across to Eagle Tavern in the centre of the photograph and beyond to the East Anglian Heights some 4 km distant. The crop in the foreground has been sown since the Summer harvest to provide Winter food for the sheep which are soon to take up temporary residence before the plough prepares the ground for Spring sown cereals. It is 11th November 2008 (at 0934 GMT) and a westerly wind of mean speed 12 knots gusting to 26 knots is being drawn across the landscape by a low centred just to the east of Aberdeen. The temperature is 8.1°C and despite Royston being under the influence of a low pressure circulation a creditable 7.1 hours sunshine was achieved that day. | About 2 km to the E of Royston the ancient 166 km long Icknield Way Path emerges from a plantation into more open mainly arable countryside on its way to Knettishall Heath in Norfolk (having reached Royston from Ivinghoe Beacon in Bedfordshire). The Icknield Way is part of a much longer ancient route consisting of four long distance footpaths from Lyme Regis in Dorset to Hunstanton in Norfolk. It is one of the oldest roads in Great Britain and pre-dates the Roman occupation. The date of this view is 14th November 2008 (at 0916 GMT) with Autumn colours being in evidence and the green sheen on the field indicating the emergence of the Autumn sown cereal crop. The wind is westerly of mean speed 5 knots gusting to 12 knots in a temperature of 10.5°C. | The ancient Icknield Way referred to in the previous caption passes through the town of Royston and intersects the Roman Ermine Street at the Cross, seen here in civil twilight on 22nd November 2008 (at 1646 GMT). The historic Roysia Stone is located at this point but is partially obscured in this photograph by the illuminated traffic bollard. Some early Christmas decorations have gone up as can be seen, but it is too early for the the customary large Christmas tree which will soon be located on the paved area in the foreground. A cold northerly flow sourced in high latitudes has dominated the day's weather and the temperature at this time is only 1.3°C, in a NW wind of mean speed 5 knots gusting to 12 knots. However, the day has been essentially sunny (6.9 hours). |
