| Although September 2008 commenced with a sunny day on 1st (sunshine 8.4 hours) dull weather soon set in which set the pattern for much of the rest of the month. In this picture (taken on 1st at 0842 GMT) the view from Bury Plantation (on the eastern fringes of Royston) looking towards Hyde Hill can be seen. From this vantage point Hyde Hill blocks most of the views over the South Cambridgeshire Plain towards Cambridge (21 km distant), where the larger buildings on the southern outskirts of the city can bee seen from Royston with the naked eye on a clear day. The temperature is 15.9°C, and wind SW, mean speed 9 knots gusting to 18 knots. | This view of the Town Hall roundabout in Royston has appeared in these pages before with different displays of flowers, all seasons of the year. A fine display is invariably arranged by the Council's contractor and Summer 2008 has been no exception, as can be seen. Large volumes of traffic pass this point, mainly on the N-S A10 trunk road through route, but also on the E-W old A505 which follows the route of the ancient Icknield Way at this junction. The Town Hall was pictured on 8th September at 0823 GMT which promised to be a fine sunny day at this time but was ultimately rather cloudy with only 1.8 hours sunshine being recorded for the day. | Large expanses of recently harvested land around Lowerfield and Heath Farms to the E and SE of Royston temporarily took on a peculiar striped appearance near the end of September 2008 when rows of straw were removed and bundled into bales. The lying straw had turned the new shoots of green growth amongst the stubble yellow due to its collection being delayed by the inclement weather in the main harvesting season. This photograph was taken looking southwards on the rather hazy morning of 21st September (at 0756 GMT) and the haze and angle of view have combined to 'wash out' part of the sky. There is no wind and the temperature is 9.3°C. |
