| The presence of the photographer on the other side of the fence has aroused the curiosity of these alpacas with the one nearest the camera seemingly expecting to have its photograph taken in close-up mode. The alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated species of the South America camelid and is mainly to be found in the high Andes in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Clearly these animals can also thrive in lowland Great Britain as demonstrated by this small herd at Barkway Road, Royston (as seen at 0809 GMT on 22nd July 2008). The temperature at this time was 18.1°C in a NW breeze of mean speed 4 knots gusting to 10 knots. | This is a view of Melbourn Street, Royston from the adjacent Priory Gardens. The rear of the War Memorial is in the foreground whilst in the centre of the picture on the opposite side of Melbourn Street is the (partly obscured) Banyers Hotel. Further along Melbourn Street is the famous Royston Cave which is believed to date from the early 14th Century. The Police Station and Town Hall are off the picture to the right. Melbourn Street runs along the track of the ancient Icknield Way which crosses the Roman road Ermine Street just past the Cave. The photograph was taken at 1102 GMT on 24th July 2008, a day with 13.5 hours sunshine recorded. | A spell of fine weather towards the end of July 2008 saw the harvest get under way in the Royston area and this acreage of barley to the SE of Royston first received the attention of the combine on 23rd July. By the time this photograph was taken on 27th July (at 0807 GMT) the crop has been harvested and most of the straw baled up and taken away. The remaining bales of straw.(as in the picture) await removal. 27th July was the hottest day of the year to date at Royston with a maximum temperature of 28.7°C after an overnight minimum temperature of 17.4°C. A band of slow moving broken cloud restricted sunshine for the day to 6.9 hours. |
