| This innovative giant model pheasant was spotted at Waddesdon Manor, some 66 km WSW of Royston on 3rd May 2008 (photographed at 1154 GMT). The pheasant is covered in flowers which receive nutrients and water through tubes from underground which go through the bird's legs and body to reach all the flowers from beak to tail. The flowers are only just starting to appear and the main beauty of this spectacle is yet to come. Nearby is the magnificent Manor itself, which was built in the style of a 16th Century French chateau between 1874 and 1889 for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild to entertain his guests and display his vast collection of French decorative arts. The weather was quite pleasant for early May with a maximum temperature (at Royston) of 19.7°C (after an overnight minimum of 6.7°C), and sunshine of 6.3 hours. | One of the enduring sights in the Royston area in April and May was the vast expanse of oilseed rape draped across Hyde Hill to the east of the town. Being in an elevated position and just to the N of the A505 Royston by-pass the swathes of bright yellow were visible from a distance and at close at hand by eastward bound travellers on the A505. The scene above is the one which greeted motorists making the ascent up Hyde Hill before the road enters the deep chalk cutting near its summit. The time being 0759 GMT (on 5th May 2008) this photograph was taken against the sun which has rendered an already uninteresting sky a rather milky colour. The temperature at this time is 16.8°C, later rising to a maximum for the day of 22.3°C, which is 7.2°C above the 30 Year (1976/2005) average for this day! | Whatever the time of the year the local authority ensures that the garden surrounding the memorial to the 91st Bombardment Group of the U. S. 8th Air Force in Priory Gardens in Royston is planted with seasonal flowers which provide abundant colour for most of the year. In this photograph (taken at 1552 GMT on 6th May 2008) the view is from the rear of the memorial looking across the gardens towards the Town Hall roundabout just beyond the gap in the trees. The Gardens had hosted the Royston May Fayre just the day before on the May Day Bank Holiday and this year the Fayre had for once enjoyed good weather (see previous caption) enhanced by the 10.4 hours sunshine that day. An easterly breeze of mean speed 5 knots is drifting across the Priory Gardens at this time, in a temperature of 21.3°C. |
