| The month of December 2007 commenced with a sunny morning and this was the scene at 1302 GMT on 1st in the park on the Wimpole estate some 10 km N of Royston. This view is looking northwards across an artificial lake which was created between 1765 and 1775 from old fish ponds during the 'reign' of the most famous name in English gardening history, Lancelot 'Capability' Brown . In the distance is the Gothic Tower which was built on Johnson's Hill in 1774. A brisk SSW wind of mean speed 14 knots gusting to 28 knots (at Royston) is refreshing the landscape in a temperature of 9°C. The sunshine ended at 1325 GMT and an extended shower commenced at 1415 GMT. Sunshine for the day at Royston was 4.9 hours. | This frosty scene was pictured adjacent to the B1039 Royston to Saffron Walden road 2.5 km SE of Royston at 1233 GMT on 20th December 2007. The temperature is -0.7°C in calm conditions with only the occasional wind gust of speed 2 knots. The lowest temperature at Royston in almost 11 years (since 3rd January 1997) of -6.1°C had been recorded earlier that morning at 0655 GMT and the day maximum temperature reached only 2.0°C. The day was misty and completely sunless, although the thick fog of the previous morning did not return. A temporary electrified boundary fence runs just to the right of the photographer's position to enclose an area of grassland where a flock of sheep has been folded over. | This image depicts the sunset over Therfield Heath, Royston on 22nd December 2007 (at 1531 GMT). The day had been completely cloudy with no sunshine at all but the cloud thinned sufficiently before sunset to allow some colour which soon turned pink and extended to overhead just after sunset. This day was followed by the sunniest day of the month on 23rd (with 6.7 hours sunshine) and this was followed by the wettest day of the month (rainfall 7.7 millimetres) on 24th! When the photograph was taken a SSW wind of 7 knots gusting to 14 knots was blowing across the Heath in a temperature of 5.3°C. The maximum temperature achieved that day was 7.4°C after an overnight minimum temperature of -3.6°C. |
