| The oilseed rape crop has been harvested and the land ploughed ready for the next crop. This was the scene at Lowerfield 2.5 km E of Royston on 10th September 2007 at 0753 GMT. As can be seen the soil is extremely dry, only 1.6 mm of rainfall having fallen since 24th August (and with no further rainfall until 16th September). Sunshine on the land against the backdrop of a dark sky is emphasising the light colour of the chalk soil of the district, and whilst so dry the soil is vulnerable to being lifted by gusty winds. A fresh breeze from the W of mean speed 6 knots gusting to 18 knots was in evidence at the time, whilst the temperature was 15.9°C. | Hanging baskets and tubs of flowers provide Summer long colour at the Cross, Royston. This is the point where the ancient Icknield Way crosses the Roman Ermine Street. This location has now enjoyed a quarter century of much reduced traffic consequent upon the E-W A505 Royston by-pass having been completed in 1982. The section of Ermine Street which forms the High Street was itself by-passed in the 1960's. This picture of the Cross was taken at 1546 GMT on 11th September 2007. The temperature is 19.5°C in a light northerly air, gusting occasionally to only 4 knots. Sunshine for the day was 11.8 hours with a highest temperature of 20.6°C. | The 1830's created parterre garden at Audley End House (17 km ESE of Royston) can be relied upon for a fine display of flowers and this year has proved to be no exception (as seen at 1027 GMT on 15th September 2007). Audley End House is one of England's grandest homes, having its origins in Walden Abbey which was given by King Henry VIII to Sir Thomas Audley who transformed it into his mansion. This was then rebuilt by his grandson, first Earl of Suffolk, between 1603 and 1614. King Charles II purchased Audley End in 1668, and several changes of ownership and modifications have occurred since. |
