| This month's pictures comprise of three views of Royston taken in the afternoon of 5th August 2007. This was a day of unbroken sunshine (14.0 hours total) and a maximum temperature of 29.8°C making it the hottest day of the year to date. Not far away in the eastern Atlantic ex-tropical storm "Chantelle" had been approaching the north of the British Isles on 4th but by 5th had steered a course north-eastwards between Scotland and Iceland leaving eastern England under the influence of high pressure over continental Europe whilst a further anticyclone was also building eastwards from the Atlantic Ocean. In the first picture is a view from >>>>>>>>>> | <<<<<<<<< the Royston Charity Kite Festival, an annual event held on Therfield Heath, Royston. This is a view northwards across the Main Kite Arena towards the South Cambridgeshire Plain in the distance. Conditions for kite flying were ideal with a S wind of mean speed 6 knots gusting to 22 knots, and were also ideal for the several thousand spectators in bright sunshine and a temperature of 29.1°C. The kite team on display in the picture are the Royston Power Kiters, who have large wing-shaped kites which in the wind are pulling the operators over the grass in small wheeled vehicles ('buggies'). Various other kiter teams and majorettes kept visitors >>>>>>>>> | <<<<<<<<< entertained in a 6 hour programme, whilst Therfield Heath was adorned with various other kite flying outside the main arena. The middle picture shows the A10 London Road in Royston on the 90° bend as the road approaches downtown Royston from the south, with the Chequers P. H. in view along with the entrance to the High Street immediately to its left. A short distance away are the Priory Gardens which provide the view in the third picture (at 1503 GMT). This shows the memorial to the 91st Bombardment Group of the U. S. 8th Air Force which as usual is surrounded by an impressive display of flowers (including a bed of zinnias in the background). |
