June 2007 Weather Review
Despite June 2007 being a little wetter and duller than normal in Royston, the mean temperature was once again above average.
June was the 10th consecutive month with temperatures above normal and the 14th such month in the last 15 (since April 2006). It was also the 6th consecutive warmer than average June, although the coolest June since 2002.
The mean daily maximum temperature in June was 20.3°C, which is 0.4°C above the 30 Year (1976/2005) average for Royston. The mean night minimum temperature was 1.2°C above the 1976/2005 average at 11.8°C.
The highest day maximum temperature in the month was 25.0°C on 9th, which was the lowest absolute maximum temperature in June since 1991. In contrast the lowest day maximum temperature was 14.2°C on 6th. The lowest night minimum temperature in June was 7.0°C on 1st. The warmest night in June occurred on 14th/15th when the temperature did not fall below 15.4°C. The lowest grass minimum temperature in June was 3.5°C on 1st.
The mean earth temperature at 30 cms depth as read at 0900 GMT daily was 17.6°C. The highest and lowest earth temperatures recorded in June were 19.0°C and 14.5°C on 20th and 1st respectively.
The notable heavy rains which occurred in parts of the North and West Midlands, and in South Yorkshire, in June largely missed Royston whilst moving northwards. However, due to some intense storm cells which crossed the district on 14th several places near to Royston experienced heavy downpours, which for example resulted in flooding in the village of Barley to the SE of the town, whilst Royston itself escaped the worst of these storms.
Total rainfall in June was 58.4 millimetres, which is 116% of the 1971/2000 average. A number of places in East Anglia far exceeded this amount , for example Buxton in Norfolk with 171.1 millimetres. The number of "rain days" (0.2 millimetres or more) was 18, with rainfall reaching or exceeding 1.0 millimetre on 13 of these days.
It was the wettest June in Royston since 1999. The number of days in the month in which thunder was heard was 6, and this was the highest number since 1987. Rainfall duration in the month was 40.7 hours. Rainfall for the first 6 months of 2007 totalled 368.4 millimetres, which is 136% of average.
The month commenced with 3 very sunny days, totalling 45.9 hours sunshine, but thereafter it was much cloudier and by the end of the month sunshine had slipped to 11% below average. Total sunshine in June was 160.4 hours, which was 16.7 hours less than in March 2007, and 71.7 hours less than in April 2007!
The sunniest day of the month was 2nd with 15.8 hours sunshine, whilst 4 days (6th, 7th, 14th and 30th) had no sunshine at all. It was the dullest June since 1998.
The mean wind speed in June was 1.5 mph and the maximum wind gust recorded was 37 mph on 29th. The highest daily (00/00 GMT) mean wind speed in the month was 4.8 mph on 29th, whilst the lowest daily mean wind speed was 0.0 mph (to nearest 1 decimal place) on 14th.
The analysis of wind directions as observed at 0900 GMT daily was NORTH 5 days, NE 6, E 1, SE 3, S 4, SW 6, W 4, NW 1, and CALM 0.
The mean MSL air pressure in June was 1008.8 mB, which is 8 mB below the 30 Year (1976/2005) average for Royston. The highest and lowest air pressure values recorded in June were 1024 mB and 994 mB on 5th and 25th respectively.
On 2nd the absolute lowest relative humidity reading of the month, 31% at various times between 1400 and 1705 GMT, was recorded. The highest daily (00/00 GMT) mean relative humidity was 96.4% on 7th and the lowest such daily mean was 66.8% on 2nd. The mean relative humidity over the whole month was 82.8%.
Fog (visibility < 1000 metres @ 0900 GMT) was observed on just 1 day (8th) in the month.
