| This is the sunset as seen from Royston at 1638 GMT on 17th January 2006. A decaying aircraft contrail is prominently displayed and has taken on a similar colour to the lower level clouds. A feature of this day was that only 2 minutes sunshine was recorded all day! The next day fared little better with only 12 minutes sunshine. In fact, the whole 7 day period from 13th/19th inclusive was remarkably dull with a cumulative total of only 1.7 hours sunshine. At the time of the photograph the temperature was 6.5°C (after a day maximum of 8.3°C) and a westerly wind of mean speed 2 knots gusting to 12 knots was drifting across the town. | The winter walk at Anglesey Abbey (28 km NE of Royston) takes in the picturesque Lode Mill (as seen at 1142 GMT on 21st January 2006) which was purchased by Lord Fairhaven in 1934 and added to the Abbey grounds. It is believed there has been a mill on this site since the Domesday Survey, the present structure dating from the 18th century. The mill has been variously used in the past for both cement and corn grinding, and has now been restored to once again grind corn to produce flour for sale to the public. The mill was working at the time of the photograph, the dark recess at the bottom left of the building housing the revolving water paddle gear. | In this picture taken 1.5 km E of Royston at 0944 GMT on 29th January 2006 the sun is struggling to break through a fog bank to illuminate this very frosty landscape. Patchy cloud is also moving in from the NE in a light air of 2 knots, and a temperature of -2.3°C (after an overnight minimum of -3.1°C). Both the fog and the cloud soon cleared to give a mainly sunny day until a bank of stratus cloud which had been moving steadily from the North Sea across East Anglia reached Royston at about 1600 GMT. The sunshine total for the day was 6.7 hours (taking the month's total to past the monthly average of 55.5 hours), and the maximum temperature was 4.8°C. |
