The House at Wrest Park, Silsoe, Bedfordshire (27 km SSW of Royston) as pictured above on 3rd September 2005 at 1259 GMT was designed by the Earl de Grey in a French style and built between 1834 and 1839. This replaced the old house which stood on a site some 320 metres to the south (behind the photographer) of the present house and was demolished by the earl. From the terrace of the house (facing) there is a splendid view southwards over the magnificent gardens, water features and woodland. The gardens are still undergoing restoration by English Heritage and the Silsoe Research Institute. As can be seen from the state of the sky it was a very pleasant early Autumn day, with a maximum temperature of 25.0°C and sunshine of 8.7 hours at Royston.	It was thought that scenes like this were things of the past after the practice of stubble burning ceased in the early 1990's, but this charred acreage was to be seen at Hyde Hill, Royston after a standing cereal crop caught fire during harvesting on 31st August 2005. The intense conflagration caused a pall of black smoke to rise above Royston and this was clearly visible from a distance of 15 km and beyond. Fortunately, the fire was just kept away from nearby houses as can be seen in the picture. This photograph was taken some days later on 6th September at 0808 GMT in calm conditions and a temperature of 17.0°C. Although sunny at the time, only 3.9 hours sunshine had been accumulated by the end of the day, whilst a maximum temperature of 22.6°C was achieved.	The flower, vegetable and fruit displays seemed to be better than ever this year in the walled kitchen garden at Wimpole Hall (some 10 km N of Royston). In this photograph (taken on 13th September 2005 at 1038 GMT) just a small selection of the many varieties of dahlias adorns the foreground whilst fruit and vegetables plus the restored glasshouse can be seen in the background. A colourful display of squash varieties was mounted in the glasshouse. A light SSW breeze of 2 knots gusting to 8 knots (at Royston) is hardly detectable in the shelter of the garden and a temperature of 20.7°C (at Royston) feels pleasant enough. Cloud built up rather quickly in the late morning but thinned out during the afternoon to give a sunshine total of 9.6 hours for the day.
