On the dull morning of 14th August 2005 (at 0844 GMT) a vintage tractor (along with several others) is coming to the end of a 24 hour plough-in at Lowerfield Farm near Royston to raise funds for a local hospital charity. A large acreage of ground has been covered and only 45 minutes more ploughing remains at the time this photograph was taken. After so much dry weather it was perhaps unfortunate that the event was accompanied by rainfall although this may have helped to soften the ground somewhat. A W wind of mean speed 5 knots gusting to 12 knots is drifting across this exposed landscape, and the temperature is 14.3°C. The state of the sky set the pattern for the rest of the day and only 0.6 hours sunshine was recorded. This several hundred metres long strip of sunflowers is nestling in a shallow valley on the Burloes Estate to the SE of Royston and was photographed at 0830 GMT on 17th August 2005. The cereal crop (not pictured) in the field to the left of this view has only just been harvested and some baled straw remains to be gathered. The cloudless sky at this time heralded a fine day, and after an overnight minimum temperature of 13.3°C a maximum temperature of 25.5°C (2.5°C above the 30 Year average for this day) was later reached, and a total of 13.4 hours sunshine was recorded for the day. At the time of the photograph the temperature is 18.0°C and a south-easterly breeze of mean speed 2 knots gusting to 10 knots is gently agitating the sunflowers.    Peace an tranquility are hallmarks of the Swiss Garden at Old Warden Park, Bedfordshire (21 km W of Royston) photographed here on 23rd August 2005 at 1415 GMT. This unique landscape garden was originally created in the 1820's but after falling into disrepair by the early 1970's Bedfordshire County Council leased the garden later that decade and commenced a restoration programme. This continued for some years and the result is the beautifully conserved garden we see today. The delightful Swiss Cottage, a venue for licensed civil wedding ceremonies, is featured in the picture. 23rd August was a lovely Summer's day (10.2 hours sunshine at Royston), preceded on 22nd by the wettest day at Royston for 9 months, and followed by another wet day on 24th!
