Once again the Spring landscape in the Royston area has been covered with vast swathes of bright yellow oilseed rape, the above photograph depicting the crop at Poorsland between Royston and Barley on the sunny morning of 3rd May 2005 (at 0845 GMT). This is  the view northwards from the B1039 Royston to Saffron Walden road some 3 km SE of Royston. The temperature is a relatively high (for time of day) 15.2°C, after an overnight minimum of 11.2°C. The maximum temperature for the day was 17.8°C, which is 3.2°C above the 30 Year (1973/2002) average for 3rd May. A S wind of mean speed 5 knots gusting to 16 knots is meeting little resistance in this very open area. A daily total of 5.6 hours bright sunshine was recorded.	During the afternoon of 7th May 2005 a line of heavy showers moved southwards over East Anglia but kept just to the east of Royston. In this photograph (taken at 1538 GMT) one of these showers is visible on the eastern horizon as viewed from the Hertfordshire Way about 3 km south of Royston. At this point the Hertfordshire Way proceeds southwards to the right of the photographer for several hundred metres before passing Hatchpen and ascending the relatively steep escarpment of the East Anglian Heights. It was fairly windy at this time, with a NW wind of mean speed 11 knots gusting to 28 knots in a temperature of 12.9°C. The maximum temperaure achieved that day was 14.0°C, whilst sunshine for the day was a respectable 9.4 hours.	Although these flowers (pansies) on the Town Hall roundabout in Royston appear to be at their flowering peak at the time of this photograph on 17th May 2005 at 1351 GMT, it is hard to believe that within about 10 days they had been uprooted in favour of the new bedding plants for the Summer season. However, as both Royston residents and motorists travelling through Royston on the A10 London to Kings Lynn trunk road will testify, these plants had already given a fine display of colour over a period of several months. The 1859 built Town Hall can be seen on the right of the picture whilst the next building along (in Melbourn Street) is the 'new' Police Station of the Hertfordshire Constabulary which was built in 1990. The 7th (!) ground frost of May occurred on this day.
