| The New Year weather in Royston commenced with a colourful sunrise on 1st January 2005. This photograph, however, was taken at Stevenage (20 km SSW of Royston) at 0754 GMT where the photographer had a better view at the crucial moment! Note the aircraft contrail at the top of the picture which has also taken on the colour of the sunrise. A very mild but dull day followed at Royston. The maximum temperature achieved was 11.8°C, which is 5.3°C above the 30 Year (1973/2002) average for this day. Sunshine for the day was restricted to 0.2 hours. (Photograph Daniel Barker, Stevenage) | An excellent view can be experienced from high on the N facing escarpment of the East Anglian Heights some 3 km S of Royston. This is the view at 1031 GMT on 2nd January 2005 looking northwards down on to Hatchpen and beyond to the ridge concealing the town of Royston, and then to the barely visible distant horizon of the South Cambridgeshire Plain. Despite the sunshine a brisk W wind gusting to 20 knots and a temperature of 4°C resulted in somewhat chilly conditions at this exposed location. The temperature climbed to a maximum of 6.5°C and sunshine for the day was a respectable 5.8 hours. | This is a distant view of Burloes Hall and Burloes Farm on the eastern perimeter of Royston as seen from the SE at 0955 GMT on 19th January 2005. The original great house of Burloes built in 1903 was destroyed by fire on 19th February 1931, the present house being constructed soon after this devastating event. On the original high resolution version of the previous photograph Burloes Hall can just be seen at the top right of the picture. Weather conditions are relatively pleasant for a Winter's morning with intermittent sunshine, a temperature of 4.7°C and a W breeze of 5 knots gusting to 14 knots. |
