September (since 1972) at Royston (Iceni) Weather Station:

For the first time ever at the University Botanic Garden, Cambridge the Titan Arum, or Amorphophallus titanum, has flowered this year, and here it is seen on 3rd September 2004 at 1043 GMT. The central, spike like spadix is about 2 metres high, and has a blood red, fluted and frilly edged spathe around it, shaped like an upturned bell. At its base the spathe forms a chamber enclosing thousands of actual flowers. When the female flowers are ready for pollination the spadix heats up and emits an atrocious stench (luckily not present when this photograph was taken!) to attract its pollinators. The oats recently growing in this field at  Lowerfield  some 2.5 km E of Royston, have been safely harvested and the land has now been ploughed ready for the next crop. This view is looking due S from the Icknield Way towards the East Anglian Heights in the far distance at 0829 GMT on 18th September 2004. The appearance of the cloud formation indicates strong winds aloft, influencing conditions at ground level where a SW wind of mean wind speed 10 knots gusting to 28 knots is being recorded. A fairly windy day is in prospect, confirmed with a 24 hour (00/00 GMT) mean wind speed of 6.0 knots and maximum gust speed of 30 knots.

A number of recent and decaying aircraft contrails dominate the sky in this scene at Lowerfield to the E of Royston at 0814 GMT on 19th September 2004. A large acreage of newly ploughed land awaits its next crop, although at this time the land is very dry after the lack of rainfall over the previous few weeks and thus not conducive to seed germination. The temperature is 12.0°C after an overnight minimum of 9.2°C, and later reached a maximum of 18.0°C, 0.6°C above the 30 Year mean maximum for this day. A SW breeze of 5 knots gusting to 16 knots is refreshing the landscape, whilst sunshine for the day totalled 7.7 hours.

 This is a westwards looking view at Burloes, Royston across land just to the south of the town of Royston, as seen at 0817 GMT on 21st September 2004. The crop of beans has recently been harvested and the land now awaits the plough. A fine display of cirrus cloud is visible, but the sunshine apparent in the picture did not predominate later in the day, the sunshine total being restricted to 5.4 hours. It was a windy day with a 24 hour (00/00 GMT) mean wind speed of 8.4 knots and a maximum gust speed of 32 knots. At the time the photograph was taken these values were 11 and 22 knots respectively, whilst the temperature was 12.0°C.
