July 2004 Weather Review

July (since 1972) at Royston (Iceni) Weather Station:

This unusual concave cloud formation was spotted from a point some 2 km SE of Royston (looking in a northerly direction) at 0843 GMT on 5th July 2004. Even more unusual was a similar concave edge to the same cloud sheet on its south facing extremity (i.e as viewed in a westerly direction from this point)! The temperature at the time was 16.6°C (after an overnight minimum of 9.7°C), with a NW breeze of mean speed 3 knots, gusting to 10 knots. A maximum temperature for the day of 20.5°C was later achieved and total sunshine was 9.6 hours. The mostly dry weather of the preceding two months came to an abrupt end a few days later on 7th and 8th July when rainfall of 71.9 millimetres was recorded!	Home Farm on the Wimpole Hall Estate (some 10 km N of Royston) specialises in rare breeds of sheep and cattle and in this photograph (taken at 1040 GMT on 6th July 2004) a Clun sheep obligingly poses for the camera. Three rare breeds of cattle - the British Longhorn, the British White and the White Park (with long curved horns) also roam free in the grass fields which are part of the Farm. Although the bright sunshine of the morning gave way to increased cloud cover by noon, actual sunshine was not much affected and a total 15.0 hours sunshine was recorded at Royston. The maximum temperature for the day was 23.2°C, marginally above the 30 Year average for 6th July.	The private Rose Garden at Anglesey Abbey (28 km NE of Royston) is open to the public on only a few days per year, 10th July being one such day in 2004. In this view (at 1028 GMT) the Abbey buildings are also visible, and on the other side of the distant hedge a croquet match is in progress on the beautifully manicured Abbey lawn. The lawns seen here in the Rose Garden are of the same immaculate standard. The present Lord Fairhaven chooses several new varieties of rose each year for planting in reconstituted beds. The main entrance to the Rose Garden is flanked by two satyrs in chalk, thought to be 18th Century. This was a cooler than average July day but sunshine at Royston reached 9.8 hours.
