On 8th June 2004 the temperature at Royston reached 30.7°C, this being the earliest date in the year 30°C has been exceeded since at least 1972 (although 30°C was reached on 7th June 1996). It was almost as hot at Cromer on the North Norfolk coast (some 125 km NE of Royston), pictured above at 1418 GMT under fair weather skies. Although weather conditions on the cliff top took on the same hot characteristics as further inland, a much cooler breeze ran along the alignment of the beach from E to W. Total sunshine at Royston was 11.4 hours (after 15.2 hours on 7th).	Later varieties of oil seed rape have kept the landscape bright yellow in this part of the district well into June, compared with the crop featured last month which had faded and seeded by this time. This view is from Hyde Hill looking westwards across the town of Royston at 0759 GMT on 11th June 2004. Cloud is building up rapidly in the westerly breeze, of mean speed 6 knots, gusting to 18 knots, and restricted sunshine for the day to 9.4 hours. After an overnight minimum of 13.1°C the temperature at the time of this photograph was 17.0°C, later reaching a maximum of 21.2°C.	This is not thought to be one of the curious 'crop circles' as such but is symptomatic of the wind damage caused on 23rd June to this crop of oats at Lowerfield some 2.5 km E of Royston. The strong winds were attributable to an unusually active (for the time of year) Atlantic low which crossed the British Isles  bringing the first rainfall of note to Royston since early May. Even then the rainfall was not sufficient to ease the very dry conditions which quickly returned. The scene is as seen at 0821 GMT on 25th June 2004 in a SW breeze of 5 knots, gusting to 14 knots, and a temperature of 15.2°C. Daily sunshine was 13.2 hours.
