The rock garden in the University Botanic Garden in Cambridge (some 21 km NE of Royston) is the subject of this view at 1204 GMT on 18th May 2004. With some 8000 different specimens in the Botanic Garden there is always plenty of interest at any time of the year. Royston and Cambridge are both in the same river catchment area (Great Ouse), and data from the weather station in the Botanic Garden and from Royston (Iceni) Weather Station indicate both places normally experience remarkably similar meteorological conditions. Although cloud increased in the afternoon a sunshine total of 13.1 hours for the day was nonetheless recorded at Royston, and a maximum temperature of 21.5°C was achieved.. This view from the Greenwich Meridian at Burloes, Royston across the field of beans in the foreground shows the small community at Eagle Tavern nestling at the foot of the hill separating it from the town of Royston approximately 1 km distant. The original Eagle Tavern P H is the red building just discernible at the left of the group of buildings, whilst in the far distance the East Anglian Heights rise to 150 metres above mean sea-level. The early sunshine evident in the picture (which was taken at 0752 GMT on 20th May 2004) did not last and sunshine for the day was restricted to 4.4 hours. The maximum temperature recorded was almost 2°C above the 30 Year average for this day at 19.5°C  Once again this Spring the rolling expanses of arable land surrounding Royston have been speckled with patches of oilseed rape, an example of which is shown in this view from Poor's Land (mid-way between Royston and Barley) looking in a north-easterly direction at 0820 GMT on 22nd May 2004. Here the chalk upland of the East Anglian Heights (to the rear of the photographer) is undulating gently towards the flatter South Cambridgeshire Plain in the distance. Cumulus cloud is rapidly developing in a northerly breeze of 3 knots gusting to 10 knots but the day was essentially a sunny one with a total of 12.6 hours sunshine. After an overnight minimum temperature of 2.4°C a maximum value of 16.3°C was later recorded.
