| This is a classic view of the town of Royston from a high point at the eastern end of Therfield Heath, with Hyde Hill in the background, as seen at 1553 GMT on 6th April 2004. Although a somewhat infrequent occurrence in the sequence of mild winters in recent years, tobogganing on a run (not shown) starting from this vantage point is a popular pastime as soon as a covering of snow appears. Normally a very windy location, the wind (from across the South Cambridgeshire Plain to the N) is gusting to 'only' 16 knots (mean speed 6 knots) at this time, whilst the temperature is 7.5°C. | Until the A505 Royston By-Pass was opened in 1982 the Newmarket Road in Royston was the main east-west route through the town and carried a high volume of heavy traffic. Nowadays it is much quieter as illustrated in this view westwards towards the Town Centre at 1027 GMT on 23rd April 2004. Higher temperatures from around mid-month have accelerated new leaf growth on the trees, and this particular day (with 13.5 hours sunshine) was the second in a sequence of 5 days when aggregate sunshine reached 60.5 hours. The temperature is 15.2°C, in a very light south-easterly air, gusting occasionally to 2 knots. | This unusual horseshoe shaped aircraft contrail (indicating something of a U-turn by the pilot!) was highly visible over a wide area and for a lengthy period in the largely clear skies on 23rd April 2004. By the time this photograph was taken from the eastern side of Royston at 1609 GMT the contrail had spread in width and slowly drifted to the east of the town, and unfortunately this was not the best view. Calm conditions were experienced on the ground at the time, in bright sunshine and a temperature of 17.5°C. The maximum temperature achieved that day was 18.5°C, which was followed by a maximum of 21.7°C next day. |
