Due to the relatively moist upper air in the morning of 9th February 2004 aircraft contrails were slow to dissipate and pronounced displays of this phenomenon were seen over central England. In this view (as seen at 0914 GMT) looking north-westwards from Hyde Hill, Royston over the northern fringes of the town and beyond on to the South Cambridgeshire Plain, an abundance of contrails can be detected, albeit mostly in an advanced state of dissipation. After an overnight minimum of -1.6°C the temperature is -0.5°C, later rising to a maximum of 5.0°C. The wind direction is westerly and of mean speed 4 knots, gusting to 10 knots. A very sunny day followed (8.2 hours sunshine).	It may still be the winter season but the Winter Garden at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire (28 km NE of Royston) is alive with blossom and colour as evidenced in this photograph taken at 1318 GMT on 21st February 2004. In addition to the shrubs and trees in blossom many specimens exhibit coloured stems and branches to complement the many shades of green and add to the overall effect. Although the temperature is not far from average at 6°C (maximum temperature at Royston 6.3°C, 1.0°C below the 30 Year mean for this day) a fairly strong NE wind is introducing a significant wind chill factor. The day was predominantly bright but cloudy, and bright sunshine was restricted to just 1.2 hours at Royston.	At first sight this scene at the Newmarket Road Playing Field in Royston (as seen on 25th February 2004 at 0903 GMT) may appear to show a branch of a tree but it is, in fact, the trunk! It stands prominently at one of the entrances to the Playing Field and takes a horizontal gait for most of its length. An overnight snow shower has left a light covering of snow, visible also on Hyde Hill in the distance. The temperature is -1.3°C (overnight minimum -2.2°C), whilst the wind is from a north-westerly direction, and of mean speed 2 knots, gusting to 10 knots. Bright sunshine (total 8.8 hours) prevailed for most of the day, which made a welcome change from the rather dull nature of much of February to date.
