November 2003 Weather Review

The town of Royston is endowed with several mature plantations of predominantly beech trees, this being the Newmarket Road Plantation to the east of the town. The Autumn colours have been particularly vivid this year, as can be seen in this view looking east up towards Hyde Hill at 1212 GMT on 4th November 2003. It was a pleasantly mild and sunny early November day, the temperature at the time of 14.1°C being close to the day maximum of 14.4 °C. The wind direction is south-westerly, and the mean wind speed 5 knots, gusting to 16 knots.  Sunshine for the day was 7.3 hours. On a day (12th November 2003) when sunshine was at a premium, only 0.5 hours sunshine being recorded all day, this photograph was taken at 1518 GMT during a rare flash of hazy sunshine. It shows a view to the north-east across the Pen Hills at the western end of Therfield Heath, Royston with the Fox Covert Nature Reserve in the background. The temperature has fallen to 10.5°C, after its earlier day maximum of 11.9°C, whilst a north-westerly wind of mean speed 5 knots, gusting to 14 knots, is reaching the area from nearby  Bedfordshire and over the South Cambridgeshire Plain. The green shoots of recovery! After the exceptionally dry August, followed by a dry first half of the Autumn, germination of the Autumn sown cereals in the district has been rather difficult. However, a mild and wet November has redressed the balance somewhat and by the time this picture was taken on 27th November 2003 (at 0943 GMT) the germination of this crop at Lowerfield some 3 km east of Royston is looking strong and healthy. This was a splendid Autumn day, with a maximum temperature of 7.1°C,  and feeling very pleasant in the light wind and abundant sunshine (total 6.9 hours).
