In this late afternoon (1636 GMT) view of the Cross, Royston on 15th September 2003 the sunshine and state of the sky indicate pleasant early Autumn weather conditions are being enjoyed.. In fact, the daily maximum temperature was 6.7°C above the 30 year mean for this day at 24.6°C, and a total of 9.6 hours sunshine was recorded. At the time of the photograph the temperature was 23.9°C and a light breeze of mean speed 1 knot, gusting to 6 knots, was drifting across the town. The Cross is the meeting point of two ancient routes, the N-S Ermine Street and the E-W Icknield Way. In the 1960's road traffic was routed away from the Ermine Street (the town's High Street), whilst the building of the A505 Royston by-pass in 1982 diverted traffic off the Icknield Way route through the town.	Motorists travelling  southwards on the A10 road through Royston are probably too busy negotiating the one-way system to be able to pay much attention to this distinctive Royston building, the Old Magistrates Court and Police Station. The building (as seen at 0855 GMT on 17th September 2003) was in use from 1883 to 1991 for the purposes indicated. A newly built Police Station in Melbourn Street came into use in 1991, and Court cases moved away from Royston to larger towns in the vicinity. This day was even warmer than 15th September (previous photograph) and the maximum temperature of 27.0°C was no less than 9°C above the 30 Year (1973/2002) mean for 17th September.. The sunny conditions in evidence continued throughout the day, giving a sunshine total of 11.8 hours.	This manor house in the Jacobean style is Anglesey Abbey, some 28 km NE of Royston. The house is on the site of monastic buildings which dated back to the 12th Century. There is little left now of the original as many alterations were made over the centuries and the present house as pictured was created by the first Lord Fairhaven and his brother from 1926 onwards. The Anglesey Abbey estate is made up of 100 acres of gardens and parkland including the 18th Century Lode watermill. The photograph was taken on 17th September 2003 (at 1351 GMT). At this time of the year the extensive dahlia displays are at their best, both in the Formal Garden and in the dedicated Dahlia Garden. The day was sunny and hot (maximum temperature 27.0°C at Royston, with 11.8 hours sunshine).
