Hatfield House (some 36 km SSW of Royston) is one of the finest Jacobean houses in Great Britain and is pictured here at 1410 GMT on 8th August 2003. The stately home was built in the shape of an 'E' between 1608 and 1612 to replace the Royal Palace where Queen Elizabeth I lived as a child. A hot, dry spell is in progress, the lawn in the foreground showing signs of the lack of rainfall. The 30 Year  highest temperature record at Royston (Iceni) Weather Station was broken two days before on 6th (35.1°C) and again two days later on 10th (36.4°C), but on 8th the temperature only reached 27.0°C due to a cloudy morning. Sunshine for the day (at Royston) was 7.4 hours.	Travellers along the A10 trunk road between London and Kings Lynn will fleetingly see this fine display of flowers on the Town Hall roundabout near the centre of Royston. The 1855 built Town Hall itself forms the backdrop to this photograph which was taken at 0724 GMT on 16th August 2003. Whatever the season the roundabout garden is a reliable source of colour. Although the sky is clear at this time and bright sunshine prevails, patches of cloud in the afternoon and evening restricted the sunshine total for the day to 9.6 hours. The temperature is 15.0°C and a north-easterly breeze of mean speed 2 knots, gusting to 8 knots, is drifting across the town. The maximum temperature reached during the day was 24.1°C.	The walled Organic Kitchen Garden at the stately home Audley End House (17 km ESE of Royston) boasts an impressive display of vegetables, fruit and flowers. In this view along the east wall of the Garden (as seen at 1301 GMT on 14th August 2003) the flowers in the foreground (per the label!) are Rudbekia Laciniata Flore Plena whilst those in the background are Rudbeckia Herbstonne. On the other side of the wall is the much smaller but delightful Pond Garden which has varied flower displays as well as the water features. Bright sunshine prevailed for most of the day and (at Royston) achieved a very respectable total of 13.4 hours. The maximum temperature at Royston was 24.1°C.
