May 2003 Weather Review

Swathes of brilliant yellow oilseed rape have once again graced the Royston area this Spring, although here the crop at Burloes, Royston is about to seed and lose its colour when seen on 10th May 2003. This view is looking westwards across the southern fringes of the town at 0853 GMT. The temperature has already risen to13.2°C after an overnight minimum of 7.0°C. The wind direction is SW, and the mean wind speed is 4 knots, gusting to 10 knots. Sunshine was a below average 4.8 hours for the day, and this perhaps helps to explain why the maximum temperature reached no higher than 15.9°C.	The Royston Priory Gardens hosted the town's May Fayre earlier in the month, and when this picture was taken on 15th May 2003 (at 0903 GMT) the Gardens were displaying a fine array of Spring flowers as usual. The 12th Century Parish Church can be seen in the background, whilst the buildings in the far background are on the opposite side of Melbourn Street. At the time of the photograph the air is calm with only the occasional light gust from the N and the temperature is 10.9°C.  The bright sunshine in evidence continued for much of the day, totalling 9.9 hours by sunset.	This landscape is typical of the open 'prairie' style country to the south of Royston, and in this picture the rapidly developing barley crop in the foreground is rolling gently in the westerly breeze of mean speed 5 knots, gusting to 10 knots. The view is as seen on 25th May 2003 at 0845 GMT looking SE from Lowerfield  (some 3 km ESE of Royston) across Wardington Bottom and on to village of Great Chishill on the distant ridge. The sun is temporarily obscured by cloud, but intermittent sunshine through the day totalled 8.9 hours.  The temperature is 12.3°C, later rising to a maximum of 18.1°C.
