A country scene typical of the Royston area; wide open spaces utilised for arable farming, under a big sky. This view at Lowerfield, some 3 km SE of Royston, is looking northwards from the B1039 road. The low ridge on the horizon lies beyond the county boundary in Cambridgeshire. As can be seen, cumulus clouds are rapidly developing at the time the photograph was taken (0827 GMT on 7th June 2001) but not enough to prevent a sunshine total of 10.0 hours for the day. The temperature is 13.0°C (later to reach a maximum of 16.9°C), and the mean wind speed is 6 knots, gusting to 14 knots, from a WSW direction.	This is the view above the tree and roof tops of the northern part of Royston at 1008 GMT on 18th June 2001, as seen from Coombes Hole. Cumulus clouds are building underneath a high veil of cirrus and the surface wind is north-westerly, of mean speed 3 knots, gusting to 12 knots. The temperature is 15.3°C, later reaching a maximum of 18.6°C, which is 1.7°C below the 25 year average for this day. Bright sunshine still persists, having commenced at 0400 GMT, but by the time the photograph was taken, 6.2 hours of the day's toal of 8.1 hours had already been recorded. The afternoon was mainly cloudy with just a few brief sunny intervals.	The white cliffs of Royston! Spring leaf growth has partially obscured the vertical walls of chalk in the cutting carved into Hyde Hill in 1981 for the route of the A505 Royston by-pass. Although it is only 1050 GMT (on 26th June 2001) the temperature has nonetheless already risen to 24.6°C, and proceeded to reach a maximum of 27.6°C at 1305 GMT. This was the highest temperature of the year so far. A handsome sunshine total of 13.3 hours was recorded by the end of the day, but this value does not stand comparison with the 15.7 hours accumulated the previous day. The wind direction is SE, and is of mean speed 6 knots, gusting to 16 knots.
