The last snow of Winter? This is the scene looking westwards on Therfield Heath, Royston on 3rd March 2001 at 1011 GMT. The temperature is 0.3°C after overnight minimum and grass minimum temperatures of -5.1°C and -11.1°C respectively. This grass minimum temperature was lower than any recorded in the Winter (December/February). A light air of mean speed 2 knots from the north-east is drifting across the Heath. The sunshine in evidence at the time the photograph was taken had totalled 5.2 hours by the end of the day. For the record the scene was repeated on 21st March when further snowfall occurred in the morning (but which soon disappeared due to the advance of milder air). This photograph which was taken at 1019 GMT on 5th March 2001 depicts the south-eastern approach to Royston on the B1039 Barkway Road, but what is not indicated is the steep hill just around the corner as the road descends into the centre of town. In the bright sunshine the temperature has already risen steeply to 3.5°C after an overnight minimum of -4.0°C and grass minimum of -8.5°C. A southerly breeze of mean speed 1 knot, occasionally gusting to 6 knots is in evidence. A handsome sunshine total of 9.7 hours was achieved that day. Just visible in the middle background is the entrance to the new housing development on the site of the former Shaftesbury House School. The view shown above was photographed at 1016 GMT on 19th March 2001 looking northwards from the excellent vantage point of Whiteley Hill some 3 km south-east of Royston. Fine views can be had in all directions from here, particularly of the East Anglian Heights to the south and towards Duxford Airfield to the east. The (unclassified) road branches off from the B1039 (to Saffron Walden) a few hundred metres over the rise, and to the rear after descending Whiteley Hill proceeds up the slopes of the East Anglian Heights to the village of Barkway. A somewhat variable but mainly north-easterly wind is gusting to 4 knots, with a temperature of 3.9°C. Sunshine total for the day was 5.5 hours.
